The Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Residency Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center prepares residents to be exceptional generalists for independent practice in the care of both children and adults with a wide range of healthcare needs.  

Our program provides a wide breadth of clinical and academic experiences. From this generalist training, residents may choose to practice as a generalist or seek additional specialty training. 

We combine two extraordinary categorical programs, the Vanderbilt Internal Medicine Residency Program and Pediatric Residency Program, to create one of the nation's top Med-Peds Residency Programs.

Our residents can be prepared for careers in community practice, underserved practice, academic medicine, scientific research, generalist practice, subspecialty practice, global health, public health, health equity, health policy, bioinformatics, ethics, and more.

Strong faculty mentorship and support

The Vanderbilt Med-Peds Program is supported by dedicated Med-Peds faculty who are board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
The Med-Peds residents practice alongside the Med-Peds faculty at the Vanderbilt Med-Peds clinic in a supportive clinical training environment providing exceptional primary care to adults, children and families.

The primary goal of the Med-Peds clinic is to foster compassionate delivery of healthcare, patient advocacy, and scholarship to improve the health of the community. The Med-Peds faculty serve as both preceptors in the Med-Peds resident clinic and resident mentors who are deeply invested in the residents’ success and professional development.  

Established in 1983, the Vanderbilt Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program today includes 24 residents (6 per PGY class), a PGY-5 Chief Resident, and a group of 12 dedicated Med-Peds faculty. 

Over the past 10 years, 88% of our graduates have developed careers in academic medicine. Others hold leadership roles as clinicians in their communities, at the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in state health departments, and at global health sites. Our Med-Peds faculty mirror the diversity in the resident career choices. Our Med-Peds primary care faculty includes clinician-educators and physician scientists with expertise in primary care, acute outpatient and inpatient care, palliative care, sports medicine, pharmacology, obesity prevention, addiction medicine, care of persons with disabilities, medical education, quality and patient safety, public health, and health services research.

Our residents are structurally and culturally well-integrated into both parent programs. The Vanderbilt Internal Medicine Residency and the Vanderbilt Pediatric Residency programs have rich clinical experiences with robust clinical volume, and significant exposure to all types of patients with common problems, complex clinical scenarios, and rare diagnoses. 

Our Med-Peds Program identity is fostered through two unique curricular components: the combined Med-Peds Clinic and the Med-Peds weekly education conference. 

Program aims: 

  • Provide exceptional clinical training in internal medicine and pediatrics that is patient-centered and addresses health across the continuum of the lifespan, which prepares residents for independent practice in the care of children and adults 
  • Promote and expect academic and clinical excellence 
  • Provide opportunities for scholarly inquiry and scholarship by providing resources, mentorship and an environment of intellectual curiosity 
  • Cultivate excellence in teaching (for patients/students/colleagues) 

  • Develop leaders in healthcare delivery, discovery, and education

  • Create a culture of support, caring and wellness for residents and faculty 
  • Foster a culture that supports diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging for residents and faculty 
  • Promote professionalism and integrity for interactions with patients, staff, colleagues, and the community 
  • Promote awareness and engagement of the community and the role of the community in health
