Cardiovascular training at the intersection of clinical care, scientific inquiry and scholarly endeavors

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine has an experienced group of physicians, program directors, advanced practice providers, and nurses who are dedicated to educating trainees, faculty, staff and patients. Our educational activities are based on the ACGME’s six core competencies as they pertain to training and lifelong learning. In addition, we have developed programs that focus on important nonclinical skills such as team building, leadership and professional development. Our educators are known locally and nationally as leaders in cardiovascular medicine, and are dedicated to mentoring and coaching trainees and faculty that are interested in careers in clinical medicine, science and education.

We are an ACGME-accredited program site that provides comprehensive training and exposure in all major areas of cardiovascular medicine and its subspecialties while promoting scientific inquiry and scholarly endeavors. Trainees in each of our eight fellowship programs participate in clinical rotations at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and the immediately adjacent Nashville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. Elective rotations and ambulatory clinics are also available at Nashville General Hospital.

Diverse Training Opportunities

We have a robust educational program for our Internal Medicine residents, and offer a multidisciplinary cardiovascular disease course to third- and fourth-year medical students. We  also offer an opportunity for Internal Medicine residents and Cardiovascular Medicine fellows from other institutions to participate in select cardiovascular rotations offered at VUMC to complement training at their home institution.

Led by experienced faculty and fellows, our division’s educational programs consist of didactic conferences, interactive case studies, Morbidity and Mortality conferences, journal club and simulation. Additionally, we offer lectures and workshops that promote faculty development and wellness.
