Advanced IBD Fellowship Program



Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers an advanced IBD fellowship training program for qualified candidates. The Advanced IBD Fellowship is a one-year program.  

This training experience involves: 

  • Rigorous outpatient and inpatient clinical training
  • The opportunity to engage in research projects

 Our goal is to expose trainees to excellent clinical training in IBD, and to facilitate the growth of future clinical and academic leaders in IBD. 

The fellowship is 12 months in duration and divided into focused rotations in outpatient and inpatient settings as well as time reserved for scholarly activity.  

Outpatient rotations include: 

  • IBD Clinics in our multidisciplinary IBD center where fellows will be exposed to medical, nutritional, and psychosocial management of IBD 
  • Endoscopy: IBD-focused endoscopy sessions with the option to learn rectal ultrasound for perianal Crohn’s disease as well as general GI endoscopy sessions 
  • Colorectal surgery clinics 
  • IBD-focused radiology  
  • IBD-focused pathology  

Inpatient rotations include:  

  • IBD Consults with a team composed of the IBD fellow, IBD faculty, and general GI fellows 
  • General GI Consults

Fellows will have one half-day weekly of dedicated time reserved for scholarly activities. In addition, the fellow will also have a dedicated month for participation in scholarly activities. 

Multiple didactic opportunities are provided within the fellowship among the IBD faculty and GI division. These include: 

  • Weekly GI Grand Rounds 
  • Monthly IBD Roundtable Conference 
  • Monthly IBD Journal club 
  • Monthly multidisciplinary colorectal/IBD conference 
  • Quarterly IBD-focused lectures with the general GI fellowship

Interested applicants must have completed a three-year ACGME accredited gastroenterology training program. 
All applicants are expected to apply for a Tennessee medical license.  
This program does not provide sponsorship for any visa classifications.

All applications are reviewed by the program director and applicants are selected for interviews. Each applicant is interviewed by our IBD faculty. Selection of applicants will be determined by the program director as well as input from the IBD faculty.
